ABSTRACT

Objective To compare the walking abilities of an unilateral transfemoral amputee with four different prosthetic knee joints, to provide a reference for clinical prosthetic prescription. Methods An unilateral transfemoral amputee was asked to wear four kinds of pros-thetic knee joints, mechanical four-bar, pneumatic four-bar, hydraulic and intelligent prosthetic knee joints, and evaluated with Timed Up and Go Test, indoor 6-Minute Walk Test, Static Stand Balance Test and a 1000-meter Outdoor Walking Ability Test, wearing Intelligent De-vice for Energy Expenditure and Activity. Results The amputee consumed the least energy and walked the fastest with intelligent prosthetic knee joint. Conclusion There are some difference in walking ability with different prosthetic knee joints.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo research a protein chip method which can simultaneously quantitative detect β-Lactoglobulin (β-L) and Lactoferrin (Lf) at one time.

METHODSProtein chip printer was used to print both anti-β-L antibodies and anti-Lf antibodies on each block of protein chip. And then an improved sandwich detection method was applied while the other two detecting antibodies for the two antigens were added in the block after they were mixed. The detection conditions of the quantitative detection for simultaneous measurement of β-L and Lf with protein chip were optimized and evaluated. Based on these detected conditions, two standard curves of the two proteins were simultaneously established on one protein chip. Finally, the new detection method was evaluated by using the analysis of precision and accuracy.

RESULTSBy comparison experiment, mouse monoclonal antibodies of the two antigens were chosen as the printing probe. The concentrations of β-L and Lf probes were 0.5 mg/mL and 0.5 mg/mL, respectively, while the titers of detection antibodies both of β-L and Lf were 1:2,000. Intra- and inter-assay variability was between 4.88% and 38.33% for all tests. The regression coefficients of protein chip comparing with ELISA for β-L and Lf were better than 0.734, and both of the two regression coefficients were statistically significant (r = 0.734, t = 2.644, P = 0.038; and r = 0.774, t = 2.998, P = 0.024).

CONCLUSIONA protein chip method of simultaneously quantitative detection for β-L and Lf has been established and this method is worthy in further application.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUNDSurgical resection remains the treatment of choice for pulmonary arteriovenous malformation but removes some normal lung parenchyma. This study aimed to evaluate the effect and safety of the lung-saving procedure of fistulectomy as an alternative to lung resection.

METHODSFrom July 2003 to July 2008, 6 selected patients with pulmonary arteriovenous malformations underwent fistulectomies. Among them, 1 patient underwent emergency operation and 2 underwent bilateral operations. One patient received postoperative embolotherapy.

RESULTSNo hospital deaths or postoperative morbidity occurred. PaO2 increased significantly after operation. All patients were free of symptoms and hypoxia during a follow-up for 9 months to 5 years.

CONCLUSIONSFistulectomy is a safe and effective procedure for patients with pulmonary arteriovenous malformation and may be an alternative to lung resection.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the creativity of medical students and study their personality characteristics using personality questionnaires.

METHODSThis investigation was conducted among 310 medical students using 16 Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF) and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ).

RESULTSA total of 302 students completed the questionnaires. The male and female students showed significant differences in two sub-factors with similar creativity. Four subfactors were identified to positively or inversely correlate to the creativity. The number of male students without either high or low scores was greater than that of female students. The incidences of abnormal scores in 16PF showed significant difference between students with typical EPQ scores and those with atypical scores for introversion-extroversion.

CONCLUSIONSThese medical students do not show high creativity in this study. Compared with the male medical students, the female students are more likely to have extroverted personality, and their scores for 16 basic personality factors easily exceed the normal ranges, suggesting the necessity of mental health education. The students with at least 5 abnormal scores in 16PF may show a typical introversion-extroversion personality, and individual psychological counseling can be considered when necessary.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo study the activity of esterases, including butyrylcholinesterase (BchE), carboxylesterase (CarbE), paraoxonase (PonE) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE), and to explore the effect of genetic polymorphism on the activity of esterase for workers exposed to organophosphorus pesticides (OPs).

METHODSTwo hundred and forty-one long term OPs directly exposed workers and 151 indirectly exposed workers in the same factory were taken as study group. One hundred and sixty unexposed persons were taken as control group. The activity of serum enzymes was measured and the polymorphic distribution was detected using 7900 genotype detecting system and CMOS Chip technique. The effect of long-term exposure to organophosphorus pesticides was analyzed.

RESULTSThe activities of BchE, CarbE and PonE were independent on the gender or age in control group. Average values of Carb and BchE activities of directly and indirectly exposed workers were lower than those in control group respectively. PonE activity in directly exposed group was lower than that in control group. AChE activity in directly exposed group was lower than that in indirectly exposed group. All the differences were significant (P < 0.01). In the direct exposure group, the frequency of three variants of butyrylcholinesterase gene K (BCHE-K) polymorphism was 74.3%, 24.1% and 1.6% for UU, UK and KK respectively. Frequency of allele U and K was 0.863 and 0.137 respectively in the same group. Frequency of three variants of PON192 polymorphism was 15.0%, 45.5% and 39.5% for AA, AB and BB respectively in direct exposure group. Gene frequency of low activity (PON*A) and high activity (PON*B) was 0.378 and 0.622 respectively. Frequency of three variants of PON55 polymorphism was 96.2%, 3.8% and 0% for MM, LM and LL respectively in direct exposure group. Frequency of allele M and L was 0.981 and 0.019 respectively in the same group. The activity of PON was different in various genotypes of PON192 and PON55.

CONCLUSIONThe long-term exposure to OPs could inhibit the activities of CarbE, BchE, PonE and ACh E in different level. The genetic polymorphisms of PON192 and PON55 affect the activity of PonE, which is related to the detoxification of OPs and health impact.
